Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of ball and roller bearings were exported in Western Africa; which is down by -55.7% against the previous year. In general, exports saw a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 73%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, bearing exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) were the major exporters of ball and roller bearings in Western Africa, together mixing up 50% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), together making up a 41% share of total exports. Niger (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +40.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 49% share of total exports. Burkina Faso, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +20.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild decline. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of ball and roller bearings decreased by -9.6% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 258% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, bearing imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 98%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 93% of total imports in 2021. Ghana (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ball and roller bearings imports, with a CAGR of +9.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+6.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ball and roller bearings in Western Africa, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with an 11% share of total imports.

In Nigeria, bearing imports declined by an average annual rate of -5.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 342%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria amounted to $X per ton.
