The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Burkina Faso (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Mali (X tons), with a combined 88% share of total production. These countries were followed by Togo, which accounted for a further 12%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +13.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average yield of bambara beans in Western Africa rose rapidly to X kg per ha, with an increase of 8.1% compared with 2021 figures. In general, the yield continues to indicate a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports in Western Africa
Bambara bean exports declined to X tons in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 1,891% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, bambara bean exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 1,836% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Burkina Faso (X tons) represented the major exporter of bambara beans, making up 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), mixing up an 18% share of total exports. Benin (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to bambara bean exports from Burkina Faso stood at -26.4%. At the same time, Benin (+84.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +84.8% from 2012-2022. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Burkina Faso (+75 p.p.) and Benin (+3.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana saw its share reduced by -11% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X), Ghana ($X) and Benin ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 95% of total exports.
Benin, with a CAGR of +96.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -2.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, bambara bean export price increased by +35.1% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Bambara Bean Imports
Imports in Western Africa
Bambara bean imports shrank remarkably to X tons in 2022, reducing by -24.9% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 6,088%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, bambara bean imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 5,308% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Benin (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) dominates imports structure, together constituting 90% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X kg), making up a 9.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Benin (with a CAGR of +74.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest bambara bean importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Senegal ($X) and Benin ($X), together comprising 87% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +21.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -78.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (-5.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
