Banana Market Size in Western Africa
In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in the West African banana market, when its value decreased by -12.4% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 9.1%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Banana Production in Western Africa
In value terms, banana production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 34%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of banana production, comprising approx. 38% of total volume. Moreover, banana production in Cote d'Ivoire exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Mali (X tons), twofold. Ghana (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Cote d'Ivoire totaled +5.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mali (+8.9% per year) and Ghana (+2.2% per year).
In 2022, the average banana yield in Western Africa dropped modestly to X tons per ha, reducing by -3.1% against 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the banana yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of bananas were harvested in Western Africa; which is down by -11.9% on the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 31%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha, and then fell in the following year.
Banana Exports
Exports in Western Africa
Banana exports declined to X tons in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 94%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, banana exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 105%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented the key exporter of bananas, generating 85% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), constituting a 15% share of total exports.
Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bananas exports, with a CAGR of +10.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire increased by +3.2 percentage points.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest banana supplier in Western Africa, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.
In Cote d'Ivoire, banana exports increased at an average annual rate of +10.5% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 8.8% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+0.4%).
Banana Imports
Imports in Western Africa
Banana imports soared to X tons in 2022, jumping by 39% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 125% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, banana imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 95% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Senegal represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 58% of total imports. Mauritania (X tons) took a 30% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mali (4.9%). Niger (X tons) and Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +776.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest banana importing markets in Western Africa were Senegal ($X), Mauritania ($X) and Mali ($X), with a combined 94% share of total imports. Niger and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 3.9%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +89.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 8.1% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
