For the fourth year in a row, the West African banana and plantain market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by less than 0.1% to $X in 2022. The average banana and plantain yield declined slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining constant against the year before. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the banana and plantain yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of bananas and plantains production in Western Africa declined to X ha, remaining constant against 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 3.6%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, the amount of bananas and plantains exported in Western Africa fell to X tons, reducing by -7.7% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 77%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, banana and plantain exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 85%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 85% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), constituting a 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to banana and plantain exports from Cote d'Ivoire stood at +1.1%. At the same time, Ghana (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +5.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Ghana increased by +4.6 percentage points.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest banana and plantain supplier in Western Africa, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -1.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 31% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Ghana totaled $X per ton.

Imports in Western Africa

After seven years of growth, overseas purchases of bananas and plantains decreased by -10.7% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, banana and plantain imports contracted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 25%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Senegal was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 60% of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Mauritania (17%).

Imports into Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+9.3%) and Mauritania (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +9.3% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Senegal and Burkina Faso increased by +13 and +6.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bananas and plantains in Western Africa, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritania ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.

In Senegal, banana and plantain imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritania (+2.3% per year) and Burkina Faso (+7.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 8.7%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
