The West African base metal closure market reduced to $X in 2021, shrinking by -8.4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine years. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, base metal closure exports declined significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 128%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Nigeria dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Sierra Leone (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - together made up 4.6% of total exports.

Exports from Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +24.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+62.2%) and Ghana (+53.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sierra Leone emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +62.2% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria and Sierra Leone increased by +45 and +2.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest base metal closure supplier in Western Africa, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sierra Leone ($X), with a 5% share of total exports.

In Nigeria, base metal closure exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sierra Leone (+46.4% per year) and Ghana (+46.0% per year).

In general, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
