In 2021, approx. X tons of base metal hinges were exported in Western Africa; with a decrease of -49% on the year before. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 192%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, base metal hinge exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 171% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Nigeria represented the largest exporter of base metal hinges in Western Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 47% of total exports in 2021. Sierra Leone (X kg) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (10%), Senegal (6.2%) and Cabo Verde (5.7%). Mali (X kg), Togo (X kg) and Ghana (X kg) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +18.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+22.0%), Senegal (+18.6%), Cabo Verde (+15.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (+1.9%) and Mali (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sierra Leone emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +22.0% from 2012-2021. Togo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ghana (-16.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+29 p.p.), Sierra Leone (+12 p.p.), Senegal (+3.8 p.p.) and Cabo Verde (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Togo (-1.8 p.p.), Mali (-2.3 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (-4.9 p.p.) and Ghana (-15.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest base metal hinge supplier in Western Africa, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sierra Leone ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 9.4% share.

In Nigeria, base metal hinge exports increased at an average annual rate of +46.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sierra Leone (+18.0% per year) and Senegal (+45.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 37% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, base metal hinge export price increased by +117.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+24.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of base metal hinges were imported in Western Africa; picking up by 25% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, base metal hinge imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The countries with the highest levels of base metal hinge imports in 2021 were Ghana (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together finishing at 65% of total import. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took an 8.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Togo (7.1%), Nigeria (5.5%) and Guinea (4.8%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +47.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 61% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Togo, Nigeria, Guinea and Burkina Faso, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Among the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +54.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -15.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 34%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
