Exports in Western Africa

After four years of growth, shipments abroad of base metal padlocks decreased by -15.5% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports saw a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 125%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, base metal padlock exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 161% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Togo (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) were the main exporters of base metal padlocks in 2022, reaching near 38% and 36% of total exports, respectively. Ghana (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Niger (X tons). All these countries together took near 22% share of total exports. Mali (X kg) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Niger (with a CAGR of +47.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Togo ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 71% of total exports. Niger and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6.7%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Niger, with a CAGR of +38.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 30%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, approx. X tons of base metal padlocks were imported in Western Africa; standing approx. at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 37%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, base metal padlock imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +19.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

The purchases of the nine major importers of base metal padlocks, namely Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Togo, Senegal, Mauritania and Liberia, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +13.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported base metal padlocks in Western Africa, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Guinea, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana amounted to +5.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Senegal (+7.0% per year) and Guinea (+10.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -11.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 88%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
