Base Station Market Size in Western Africa

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the West African base station market, when its value decreased by -6.5% to $X. In general, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 200%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, base station exports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 442%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Benin (X kg) was the largest exporter of base stations, achieving 63% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mali (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg), together making up a 21% share of total exports. Togo (X kg), Niger (X kg), Senegal (X kg) and Cote d'Ivoire (X kg) took a minor share of total exports.

Benin was also the fastest-growing in terms of the base stations exports, with a CAGR of +24.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+7.4%) and Niger (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Togo (-3.0%), Senegal (-16.2%), Nigeria (-35.4%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-36.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Benin (+61 p.p.), Mali (+14 p.p.), Togo (+3 p.p.) and Niger (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-22.7 p.p.) and Nigeria (-49.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Mali ($X) and Benin ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 69% share of total exports.

Mali, with a CAGR of +15.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -39.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 81% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of base stations increased by 6.6% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, base station imports fell significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons) was the largest importer of base stations, committing 49% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 34% share of total imports. The following importers - Mali (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons) and Niger (X tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +27.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported base stations in Western Africa, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Guinea, with a 7.4% share.

In Ghana, base station imports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (-18.9% per year) and Guinea (+6.1% per year).

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -22.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 40%.
