Bedspread Market Size in Western Africa

In 2021, the West African bedspread market decreased by -3.2% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. The total consumption indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -5.1% against 2019 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Bedspread Production in Western Africa

In value terms, bedspread production rose to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -3.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Bedspread Exports

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, the amount of bedspreads (excluding eiderdowns) exported in Western Africa reduced to X units, with a decrease of -5.7% against 2020. In general, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 140%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, bedspread exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Benin represented the key exporting country with an export of around X units, which amounted to 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Togo (X units), constituting a 12% share of total exports. Nigeria (X units), Burkina Faso (X units) and Senegal (X units) took a little share of total exports.

Benin was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bedspreads (excluding eiderdowns) exports, with a CAGR of +61.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Togo (+24.7%) and Nigeria (+11.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-11.3%) and Senegal (-19.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Benin and Togo increased by +71 and +7.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Benin ($X) remains the largest bedspread supplier in Western Africa, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 6.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 6.3% share.

In Benin, bedspread exports expanded at an average annual rate of +39.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (+19.0% per year) and Nigeria (+3.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Bedspread Imports

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, imports of bedspreads (excluding eiderdowns) in Western Africa reduced sharply to X units, with a decrease of -97.5% against 2020. In general, imports saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 2,457% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, bedspread imports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 4,064%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Senegal (X units) was the main importer of bedspreads (excluding eiderdowns), creating 39% of total imports. Ghana (X units) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Burkina Faso (10%), Benin (9.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (7.5%), Togo (5.8%) and Nigeria (4.9%).

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bedspreads (excluding eiderdowns) imports, with a CAGR of +10.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+7.9%), Burkina Faso (+7.5%) and Nigeria (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-3.7%), Togo (-11.2%) and Benin (-19.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+30 p.p.), Ghana (+8.4 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+7 p.p.) and Nigeria (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Togo (-4.1 p.p.) and Benin (-28.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest bedspread importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Benin ($X), with a combined 58% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +8.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, dropping by -4.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 147% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Senegal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+10.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
