In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a notable expansion. Nigeria dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2021. Benin (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 6.9% share, followed by Senegal (5.4%).

Exports from Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +18.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Benin (+27.9%) and Senegal (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +27.9% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria and Benin increased by +19 and +4.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) emerged as the largest glass bottle, jar and container supplier in Western Africa, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 9.1% share of total exports.

In Nigeria, glass bottle, jar and container exports increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+4.2% per year) and Benin (+35.0% per year).

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 12%. Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of bottles, jars and other containers of glass increased by 21% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container imports stood at $X in 2021. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +10.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 52%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Ghana (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) represented the largest importers of bottles, jars and other containers of glass in Western Africa, together making up 50% of total imports. Burkina Faso (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Senegal (X units), Nigeria (X units), Cabo Verde (X units), Togo (X units) and Benin (X units). All these countries together took near 43% share of total imports.
