The West African braces and garters market was estimated at $X in 2022, rising by 2% against the previous year. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, approx. X units of braces, suspenders and garters were exported in Western Africa; shrinking by -45.7% against the year before. Overall, exports faced a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 156% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, braces and garters exports fell notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria represented the major exporter of braces, suspenders and garters in Western Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was near 47% of total exports in 2022. Guinea (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Ghana (X units), Senegal (X units) and Togo (X units). All these countries together took near 43% share of total exports. Sierra Leone (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -1.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+13.7%), Sierra Leone (+2.3%) and Guinea (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +13.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Togo (-12.6%), Senegal (-28.7%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-31.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+37 p.p.), Guinea (+15 p.p.), Ghana (+10 p.p.) and Sierra Leone (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-18.3 p.p.) and Senegal (-42.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest braces and garters supplier in Western Africa, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Guinea, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria amounted to +8.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ghana (+18.1% per year) and Guinea (+0.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 32% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded moderate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 83%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per unit), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of braces, suspenders and garters increased by 129% to X units, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 182% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, braces and garters imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 143% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 83% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritania (X units), generating an 8% share of total imports. Senegal (X units) and Ghana (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +17.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritania (+17.6%) and Senegal (+16.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +17.6% from 2012-2022. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Nigeria (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Ghana (-6.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest braces and garters importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Mauritania ($X) and Ghana ($X), together comprising 78% of total imports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +31.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, which is down by -35.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 133%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
