Brazil Nut Market Size in Western Africa

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the West African brazil nut market, when its value decreased by -12.1% to $X. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of brazil nuts increased by 178% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports recorded a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 215%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, brazil nut exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Nigeria prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Ghana (X tons) and Benin (X tons) - together made up 4.2% of total exports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the brazil nuts exports, with a CAGR of +14.2% from 2012 to 2021. Benin (-4.5%) and Ghana (-27.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria increased by +57 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Ghana dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 95% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Mauritania (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) - each reached a 3.4% share of total imports.

Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +18.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritania (+201.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +201.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Gambia (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana and Mauritania increased by +7 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported brazil nuts in Western Africa, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritania ($X), with a 3.6% share of total imports.
