The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Senegal (X units) and Nigeria (X units) were the main exporters of breathing appliances and gas masks in Western Africa, together comprising 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units), together achieving a 21% share of total exports. Ghana (X units), Liberia (X units) and Togo (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Liberia (with a CAGR of +39.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In Senegal, breathing appliances exports expanded at an average annual rate of +36.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Burkina Faso (+4.2% per year) and Nigeria (+3.1% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 52%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa

Breathing appliances imports declined remarkably to X units in 2022, shrinking by -16.5% on 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 586%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, breathing appliances imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 386% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the key importing country with an import of about X units, which accounted for 59% of total imports. Senegal (X units) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (7.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (6.3%) and Niger (5.9%). Burkina Faso (X units) and Cabo Verde (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +11.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cabo Verde (+21.3%), Senegal (+19.7%), Niger (+12.1%), Burkina Faso (+11.4%) and Ghana (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cabo Verde emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +21.3% from 2012-2022. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria, Senegal and Cabo Verde increased by +13, +7.1 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported breathing appliances and gas masks in Western Africa, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 6.5% share.

In Nigeria, breathing appliances imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+5.4% per year) and Senegal (+10.5% per year).
