The West African market for bromides and bromide oxides, iodides and iodide oxides shrank to $X in 2021, which is down by -7.6% against the previous year. Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, approx. X tons of bromides and bromide oxides, iodides and iodide oxides were exported in Western Africa; rising by 138% compared with 2020. Overall, exports, however, showed a dramatic decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 500%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, bromides, iodides and oxids thereof exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a dramatic shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 656%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Senegal prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), creating a 7.5% share of total exports.
Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bromides and bromide oxides, iodides and iodide oxides exports, with a CAGR of +80.6% from 2012 to 2021. Nigeria (-45.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+93 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -92.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest bromides, iodides and oxids thereof supplier in Western Africa, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 4.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal stood at +86.3%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 1.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 164%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Nigeria amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+3.2%).

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of bromides and bromide oxides, iodides and iodide oxides, when their volume decreased by -30.7% to X tons. In general, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 197%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell markedly in the following year.
In value terms, bromides, iodides and oxids thereof imports declined notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 146%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Ghana (X tons) represented the largest importer of bromides and bromide oxides, iodides and iodide oxides, committing 80% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Senegal (7%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to bromides, iodides and oxids thereof imports into Ghana stood at +67.8%. At the same time, Senegal (+94.2%) and Nigeria (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +94.2% from 2012-2021. Ghana (+71 p.p.) and Senegal (+6.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -70.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the largest bromides, iodides and oxids thereof importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 97% share of total imports.
Senegal, with a CAGR of +64.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -39.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (-8.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
