Nigeria prevails in exports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 90% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), generating a 4.8% share of total exports. Togo (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the brooms, brushes, and mops exports, with a CAGR of +64.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria increased by +87 percentage points.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Togo ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 64% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +30.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -89.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 44%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of brooms, brushes, and mops increased by 1.2% to X units, rising for the fifth consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports saw noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, broom, brush, and mop imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 43%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Ghana was the key importer of brooms, brushes, and mops in Western Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X units, which was approx. 37% of total imports in 2022. Nigeria (X units) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (10%), Guinea (9.7%), Senegal (8.3%), Sierra Leone (6.5%) and Gambia (5.4%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to broom, brush, and mop imports into Ghana stood at +6.7%. At the same time, Gambia (+27.1%), Sierra Leone (+10.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (+8.5%) and Senegal (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +27.1% from 2012-2022. Guinea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Nigeria (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+6.8 p.p.), Gambia (+4.6 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.1 p.p.) and Sierra Leone (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Guinea (-4.9 p.p.) and Nigeria (-10.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported brooms, brushes, and mops in Western Africa, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 12% share.

In Ghana, broom, brush, and mop imports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (-0.9% per year) and Senegal (+7.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Sierra Leone ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
