In 2022, shipments abroad of buckets, shovels, grabs and grips for ships’ derricks and cranes was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 70%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ship derrick buckets and shovels exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable slump. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Benin (X units), distantly followed by Ghana (X units), Gambia (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Niger (X units) and Mali (X units) represented the main exporters of buckets, shovels, grabs and grips for ships’ derricks and cranes, together creating 85% of total exports. Guinea (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Niger (with a CAGR of +58.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Benin ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 67% of total exports. These countries were followed by Mali, Gambia, Guinea and Niger, which together accounted for a further 10%.
Among the main exporting countries, Gambia, with a CAGR of +23.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 8.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 64% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Niger ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2022, overseas purchases of buckets, shovels, grabs and grips for ships’ derricks and cranes decreased by -8.8% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 41%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ship derrick buckets and shovels imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 40%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Ghana was the largest importing country with an import of around X units, which amounted to 31% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Senegal (X units), Guinea (X units), Liberia (X units), Mauritania (X units), Mali (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units), together mixing up a 62% share of total imports. Togo (X units) held a minor share of total imports.
Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+14.8%), Liberia (+11.2%), Senegal (+7.7%), Nigeria (+7.3%) and Burkina Faso (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +14.8% from 2012-2022. Togo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mali (-6.2%), Guinea (-7.8%) and Mauritania (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Liberia and Senegal increased by +11, +8.2, +6, +3.9 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported buckets, shovels, grabs and grips for ships’ derricks and cranes in Western Africa, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana totaled +5.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+14.3% per year) and Nigeria (+4.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 3.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per unit), while Liberia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
