In Niger, cabbage production increased at an average annual rate of +14.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Senegal (+11.2% per year) and Mali (-1.1% per year).

The average cabbage yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 9.8%. Over the period under review, the cabbage yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of cabbage and other brassicas were harvested in Western Africa; flattening at 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cabbage production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In 2022, the amount of cabbage and other brassicas exported in Western Africa rose sharply to X tons, surging by 13% against the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 195% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cabbage exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 178% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Mali (X tons) was the largest exporter of cabbage and other brassicas, comprising 87% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), mixing up a 10% share of total exports. Mauritania (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Mali was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cabbage and other brassicas exports, with a CAGR of +67.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Senegal (+13.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Mauritania (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Senegal ($X), Mali ($X) and Mauritania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 87% of total exports.

Mali, with a CAGR of +31.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+18.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

Cabbage imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, picking up by 17% on the previous year. Overall, imports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 334%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 192%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Mauritania prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 90% of total imports in 2022. Cabo Verde (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Mauritania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cabbage and other brassicas imports, with a CAGR of +24.5% from 2012 to 2022. In value terms, Mauritania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cabbage and other brassicas in Western Africa, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cabo Verde ($X), with a 6.9% share of total imports.

In Mauritania, cabbage imports increased at an average annual rate of +26.8% over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern.
