The shipments of the one major exporters of calcium carbonate, namely Mali, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Mali was also the fastest-growing in terms of the calcium carbonate exports, with a CAGR of +71.7% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of Mali (+91 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mali ($X) also remains the largest calcium carbonate supplier in Western Africa.

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 9.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 12%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Mali.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Mali amounted to -1.6% per year.

Imports in Western Africa

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of calcium carbonate decreased by -38.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 75%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, calcium carbonate imports fell notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 185%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 38% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), together generating a 43% share of total imports. Senegal (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +16.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest calcium carbonate importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 82% share of total imports. Burkina Faso, Guinea, Senegal and Mauritania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

Among the main importing countries, Guinea, with a CAGR of +13.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -11.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
