Senegal (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 3% share.
In Ghana, canary seed production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Liberia (+2.4% per year) and Senegal (+2.0% per year).

Exports in Western Africa
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of canary seed, when their volume decreased by -99.8% to X kg. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 11,467% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, canary seed exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 14,277% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
Senegal prevails in exports structure, recording X kg, which was approx. 98% of total exports in 2022. Nigeria (X kg) held a minor share of total exports.
Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the canary seed exports, with a CAGR of -30.7% from 2012 to 2022. Nigeria (-45.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+98 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-98.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest canary seed supplier in Western Africa, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 5.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Senegal totaled -25.2%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 106% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Senegal totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+12.0%).

In 2022, purchases abroad of canary seed was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 986%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, canary seed imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 594% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 97% of total imports in 2022. Cabo Verde (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the canary seed imports, with a CAGR of +47.4% from 2012 to 2022. Cabo Verde (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria increased by +53 percentage points.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported canary seed in Western Africa, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cabo Verde ($X), with a 1.7% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced decrease.
