The West African canned food market expanded to $X in 2021, increasing by 2.2% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Canned Food Production in Western Africa
In value terms, canned food production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 46%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Canned Food Exports
Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of canned food, when their volume decreased by -13.6% to X tons. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, canned food exports contracted to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Senegal prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 77% of total exports in 2021. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) held an 8.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (5.4%). The following exporters - Sierra Leone (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - together made up 6.4% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to canned food exports from Senegal stood at +9.7%. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+15.4%) and Nigeria (+9.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sierra Leone emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +15.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-2.3%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+21 p.p.) and Sierra Leone (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -2.8% and -21.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest canned food supplier in Western Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal totaled +6.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (-9.7% per year) and Nigeria (-1.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 12%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Canned Food Imports
Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of canned food, when their volume decreased by -30.8% to X tons. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 58%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then declined significantly in the following year.
In value terms, canned food imports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria (X tons) and Mali (X tons) represented roughly 36% of total imports in 2021. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Gambia (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons). All these countries together took near 42% share of total imports. The following importers - Niger (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Benin (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons) and Togo (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +12.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest canned food importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Mali ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), together accounting for 46% of total imports. These countries were followed by Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea, Gambia, Senegal, Niger, Mauritania, Sierra Leone, Benin and Togo, which together accounted for a further 48%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Gambia, with a CAGR of +9.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
