In 2022, shipments abroad of canned vegetables was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, canned vegetable exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) was the main exporter of canned vegetables, making up 54% of total exports. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 19% share, followed by Ghana (19%). Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to canned vegetable exports from Nigeria stood at +19.7%. At the same time, Senegal (+30.9%), Burkina Faso (+17.3%) and Ghana (+8.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +30.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+34 p.p.) and Senegal (+17 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest canned vegetable supplying countries in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 86% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.
Among the main exporting countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +26.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -10.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, canned vegetable export price increased by +47.2% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the amount of canned vegetables imported in Western Africa soared to X tons, rising by 47% against 2021. Overall, imports showed a prominent increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Nigeria (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented roughly 56% of total imports in 2022. Senegal (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Mali (7.3%) and Cabo Verde (4.7%). The following importers - Mauritania (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - each recorded an 8.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +20.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest canned vegetable importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 69% share of total imports. Mali, Cabo Verde, Mauritania and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +21.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
