Carrot And Turnip Market Size in Western Africa

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in the West African carrot and turnip market, when its value decreased by less than 0.1% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Carrot And Turnip Production in Western Africa

In value terms, carrot and turnip production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 21%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of carrot and turnip production was Nigeria (X tons), accounting for 69% of total volume. Moreover, carrot and turnip production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Niger (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Senegal (X tons), with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Nigeria was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Niger (+12.4% per year) and Senegal (+11.8% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of carrots and turnips in Western Africa dropped slightly to X tons per ha, stabilizing at 2021. In general, the yield, however, showed mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the carrot and turnip yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the carrot and turnip harvested area in Western Africa fell slightly to X ha, dropping by -1.7% compared with the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 5.3%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

After seven years of growth, overseas shipments of carrots and turnips decreased by -56.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 231%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, carrot and turnip exports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 252%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Senegal dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2022. Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the carrots and turnips exports, with a CAGR of +50.8% from 2012 to 2022. Mali (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+64 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Mali (-52.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest carrot and turnip supplier in Western Africa, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mali ($X), with a 1.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal stood at +61.9%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 49% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed buoyant growth. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mali totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+7.4%).

Imports in Western Africa

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of carrots and turnips decreased by -5.9% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 61%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, carrot and turnip imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Senegal (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) represented roughly 73% of total imports in 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Ghana (X tons). All these countries together took near 21% share of total imports. The following importers - Cabo Verde (X tons) and Mali (X tons) - together made up 5.5% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +45.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Mauritania ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 88% of total imports. Ghana, Cabo Verde and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +41.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 19%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
