The West African corrugated paper box market contracted modestly to $X in 2022, which is down by -3.9% against the previous year. For the fourth consecutive year, Western Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of cartons, boxes and cases of corrugated paper or paperboard, which increased by 5% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +41.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, corrugated paper box exports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +105.2% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 65% of total exports. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Ghana (7.5%) and Togo (6.7%). The following exporters - Nigeria (X tons) and Benin (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.6% share of total exports.

Exports from Cote d'Ivoire increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+104.3%), Benin (+51.0%), Nigeria (+44.8%), Senegal (+9.9%) and Ghana (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +104.3% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Togo, Senegal, Nigeria and Benin increased by +6.7, +1.8, +1.8 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest corrugated paper box supplier in Western Africa, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with an 8.1% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, corrugated paper box exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+9.9% per year) and Ghana (+0.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -6.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 17%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of cartons, boxes and cases of corrugated paper or paperboard decreased by -5.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, corrugated paper box imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 37%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Mali (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) represented the key importers of cartons, boxes and cases of corrugated paper or paperboard, together mixing up 89% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +35.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Mali ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 51% of total imports. Mauritania, Senegal, Burkina Faso and Guinea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +33.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
