Exports in Western Africa

Caustic soda exports fell to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -12.5% against 2020 figures. In general, exports saw a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented the key exporter of caustic soda in Western Africa, committing 81% of total export. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), achieving a 5.4% share of total exports. The following exporters - Mali (X tons), Liberia (X tons) and Benin (X tons) - together made up 11% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Liberia (with a CAGR of +13.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest caustic soda supplier in Western Africa, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 9.2% share.

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 7.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 27%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, the amount of caustic soda imported in Western Africa reached X tons, with an increase of 3.9% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -2.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Nigeria (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) were the main importers of caustic soda in 2021, accounting for approx. 31% and 24% of total imports, respectively. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Ghana (14%). Senegal (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Guinea (with a CAGR of +11.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Guinea ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 69% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Guinea, with a CAGR of +8.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 5.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 24%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
