Cement Clinker Market Size in Western Africa
After two years of growth, the West African cement clinker market decreased by -4.9% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.
Cement Clinker Production in Western Africa
In value terms, cement clinker production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 19%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Cement Clinker Exports
Exports in Western Africa
In 2022, approx. X tons of cement clinker were exported in Western Africa; reducing by -4.3% on 2021. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -18.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cement clinker exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 115%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Togo represented the key exporter of cement clinker in Western Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 66% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together comprising a 31% share of total exports. Ghana (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cement clinker exports from Togo stood at -1.5%. At the same time, Nigeria (+41.9%) and Senegal (+33.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +41.9% from 2012-2022. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Senegal (+23 p.p.) and Nigeria (+5.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Togo saw its share reduced by -28.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Togo ($X) remains the largest cement clinker supplier in Western Africa, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 6.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Togo totaled -4.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+24.2% per year) and Ghana (+1.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -7.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 10%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Cement Clinker Imports
Imports in Western Africa
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of cement clinker, when their volume decreased by -19.1% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
In value terms, cement clinker imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 29%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Ghana (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) were the key importers of cement clinker in Western Africa, together mixing up 63% of total imports. Guinea (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.8% share, followed by Senegal (6.3%), Mauritania (4.9%) and Benin (4.6%). Burkina Faso (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +28.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest cement clinker importing markets in Western Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X), together comprising 66% of total imports. Guinea, Benin, Senegal and Mauritania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.
Senegal, with a CAGR of +26.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 5.9%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
