The West African centrifuges market rose notably to $X in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a buoyant increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, shipments abroad of centrifuges increased by 51% to X units, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 168% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, centrifuges exports fell sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 126%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Sierra Leone (X units) was the largest exporter of centrifuges, making up 64% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), constituting a 31% share of total exports. Benin (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Sierra Leone was also the fastest-growing in terms of the centrifuges exports, with a CAGR of +66.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+39.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Benin (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Sierra Leone, Ghana and Benin increased by +64, +26 and +2.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest centrifuges supplying countries in Western Africa were Sierra Leone ($X), Ghana ($X) and Benin ($X), with a combined 78% share of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Sierra Leone, with a CAGR of +46.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, declining by -49.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a significant contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 172%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per unit), while Sierra Leone ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (-15.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, approx. X units of centrifuges were imported in Western Africa; picking up by 15% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 426% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, centrifuges imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 151%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Nigeria was the major importer of centrifuges in Western Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2021. Ghana (X units) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Burkina Faso (8.1%) and Guinea (4.8%). The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Senegal (X units) and Mali (X units) - together made up 8.6% of total imports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the centrifuges imports, with a CAGR of +34.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+32.1%), Guinea (+29.0%), Ghana (+21.3%), Mali (+14.7%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Senegal (-22.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+50 p.p.), Ghana (+6.9 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+6.3 p.p.) and Guinea (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal saw its share reduced by -4.6% and -61.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported centrifuges in Western Africa, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at +26.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+0.5% per year) and Senegal (-9.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 543% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+17.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
