Dolomite Market Size in Western Africa

In 2021, the West African dolomite market decreased by -7.5% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a mild reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Dolomite Production in Western Africa

In value terms, dolomite production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of chalk and dolomite increased by 135% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after five years of decline. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 249%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, dolomite exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 134% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Burkina Faso (X tons) represented the largest exporter of chalk and dolomite in Western Africa, mixing up 100% of total export.

Burkina Faso was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chalk and dolomite exports, with a CAGR of +30.8% from 2012 to 2021. Burkina Faso (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) also remains the largest dolomite supplier in Western Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Burkina Faso totaled +10.5%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -43.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Burkina Faso.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Burkina Faso amounted to -15.8% per year.

Dolomite Imports

Imports in Western Africa

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of chalk and dolomite decreased by -45.5% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 184% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, dolomite imports declined significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 106% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire represented the largest importer of chalk and dolomite in Western Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 79% of total imports in 2021. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Nigeria (5.2%). Benin (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dolomite imports into Cote d'Ivoire stood at +13.2%. At the same time, Nigeria (+33.0%), Benin (+10.4%) and Senegal (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +33.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+36 p.p.) and Nigeria (+4.5 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chalk and dolomite in Western Africa, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 14% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, dolomite imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+4.5% per year) and Nigeria (+27.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible descent. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
