In 2021, the West African chalk market decreased by -20.7% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption, however, posted a buoyant expansion. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chalk exports reduced notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a dramatic descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 379% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Togo represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 40% of total exports. Mali (X tons) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (16%), Cote d'Ivoire (15%) and Nigeria (6.9%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Ghana (with a CAGR of +15.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chalk supplying countries in Western Africa were Togo ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 76% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +51.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -15.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 363%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Chalk imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 80% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Senegal represented the largest importer of chalks in Western Africa, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 51% of total imports in 2021. Benin (X tons) held a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (18%). Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chalk imports into Senegal stood at +6.0%. At the same time, Nigeria (+42.4%) and Benin (+24.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +42.4% from 2012-2021. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Nigeria (+16 p.p.) and Benin (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal saw its share reduced by -5.2% and -20.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 13%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
