Cherry Market Size in Western Africa

The West African cherry market expanded notably to $X in 2022, increasing by 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a measured expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Cherry Production in Western Africa

In value terms, cherry production rose rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -4.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 25%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Mali (X tons), Guinea-Bissau (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), together accounting for 93% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +2.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cherry Exports

Exports in Western Africa

After four years of growth, overseas shipments of cherries decreased by -8.3% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 4,670% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cherry exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 3,527% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Sierra Leone (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total exports in 2022.

Sierra Leone was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cherries exports, with a CAGR of +66.8% from 2012 to 2022. Sierra Leone (+71 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X) also remains the largest cherry supplier in Western Africa.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Sierra Leone stood at +65.0%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 149% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Sierra Leone.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Sierra Leone amounted to -1.1% per year.

Cherry Imports

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of cherries were imported in Western Africa; declining by -11.6% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 105% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, cherry imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 98%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Cabo Verde (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) were the major importers of cherries in 2022, reaching near 33% and 28% of total imports, respectively. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Mauritania (8.9%), Nigeria (8.4%) and Ghana (5%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Cabo Verde (with a CAGR of +35.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cherry importing markets in Western Africa were Cabo Verde ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Nigeria ($X), together accounting for 76% of total imports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +40.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 5.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
