Chicken Meat Market Size in Western Africa
In 2021, the West African chicken meat market decreased by -2.4% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Chicken Meat Production in Western Africa
In value terms, chicken meat production contracted slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 12%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Nigeria (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), with a combined 64% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +10.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average chicken meat yield amounted to X kg per X heads in 2021, approximately equating 2020. Over the period under review, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 1.1% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per head. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the chicken meat yield remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The global number of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production stood at X heads in 2021, increasing by 1.6% on 2020. This number increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the number of producing animals increased by 10%. Over the period under review, this number reached the peak level in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, the amount of chicken meat exported in Western Africa stood at X tons, picking up by 11% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chicken meat exports rose notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 96%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Benin (X tons), together recording 97% of total export.
Benin was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chicken meat exports, with a CAGR of +21.2% from 2012 to 2021. Benin (+41 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Benin ($X) also remains the largest chicken meat supplier in Western Africa.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Benin stood at +19.7%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Benin.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Benin amounted to -1.2% per year.
Chicken Meat Imports
Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of chicken meat, when their volume decreased by -20.9% to X tons. Total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 23%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, chicken meat imports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Ghana represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 38% of total imports. Benin (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritania (9.9%), Gambia (9.5%), Guinea (7.4%) and Liberia (6.7%). Sierra Leone (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of chicken meat. At the same time, Gambia (+20.0%), Guinea (+18.2%), Mauritania (+13.3%) and Liberia (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +20.0% from 2012-2021. Sierra Leone experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Benin (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Gambia (+7.4 p.p.), Mauritania (+6.2 p.p.) and Guinea (+5.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-6 p.p.) and Benin (-16.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chicken meat in Western Africa, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Benin ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Gambia, with an 11% share.
In Ghana, chicken meat imports declined by an average annual rate of -2.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Benin (-8.8% per year) and Gambia (+17.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable decline. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Gambia ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Liberia (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
