Chicken Table Egg Market Size in Western Africa

The West African chicken table egg market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, waning by -4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Chicken Table Egg Production in Western Africa

In value terms, chicken table egg production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Nigeria (X tons) remains the largest chicken table egg producing country in Western Africa, accounting for 63% of total volume. Moreover, chicken table egg production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Burkina Faso (X tons), with a 7.1% share.

In Nigeria, chicken table egg production contracted by an average annual rate of -1.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+5.0% per year) and Burkina Faso (+1.4% per year).

Chicken Table Egg Exports

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of chicken table eggs decreased by -35.8% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 2,280% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chicken table egg exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a tangible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 3,392%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X kg), generating a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to chicken table egg exports from Cote d'Ivoire stood at +9.6%. At the same time, Nigeria (+41.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +41.7% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria increased by +21 percentage points.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest chicken table egg supplier in Western Africa, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire amounted to +1.5%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -30.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 179% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (-2.0%).

Chicken Table Egg Imports

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of chicken table eggs decreased by -4.4% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 111% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In value terms, chicken table egg imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 73%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of chicken table eggs, namely Mauritania, Liberia, Gambia and Sierra Leone, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Guinea-Bissau (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Liberia (with a CAGR of +43.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chicken table egg importing markets in Western Africa were Mauritania ($X), Liberia ($X) and Gambia ($X), together comprising 76% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Liberia, with a CAGR of +35.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Guinea-Bissau ($X per ton) and Gambia ($X per ton), while Sierra Leone ($X per ton) and Mauritania ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guinea-Bissau (-1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
