Chili And Pepper Market Size in Western Africa

The West African chili and pepper market rose slightly to $X in 2022, surging by 2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Chili And Pepper Production in Western Africa

In value terms, chili and pepper production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 30%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Nigeria (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of chili and pepper production, comprising approx. 53% of total volume. Moreover, chili and pepper production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Niger (X tons), threefold. Benin (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 8.7% share.

In Nigeria, chili and pepper production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Niger (+10.8% per year) and Benin (+10.1% per year).

The average chili and pepper yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, picking up by 2.3% compared with 2021. In general, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 16%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the chili and pepper harvested area in Western Africa shrank slightly to X ha, almost unchanged from 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 26%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the chili and pepper harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, the amount of chilies and peppers (green) exported in Western Africa dropped rapidly to X tons, reducing by -15.3% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chili and pepper exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Senegal prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 72% of total exports in 2022. Gambia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 7.2% share, followed by Nigeria (5.9%) and Guinea (5.8%). Guinea-Bissau (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +27.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Guinea-Bissau (+46.7%), Nigeria (+25.6%), Niger (+18.5%) and Gambia (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea-Bissau emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +46.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Guinea (-33.0%) and Ghana (-33.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+70 p.p.), Gambia (+6.2 p.p.), Nigeria (+5.8 p.p.), Guinea-Bissau (+3 p.p.) and Niger (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Ghana (-18.9 p.p.) and Guinea (-70.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest chili and pepper supplier in Western Africa, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Gambia ($X), with an 8.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Guinea, with a 4.4% share.

In Senegal, chili and pepper exports increased at an average annual rate of +39.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Gambia (+4.7% per year) and Guinea (-29.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -1.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, chili and pepper export price increased by +93.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 71% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Guinea-Bissau ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of chilies and peppers (green), when their volume decreased by -11.6% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 127%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, chili and pepper imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 137% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mauritania (X tons) represented the major importer of chilies and peppers (green), committing 50% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons), together creating a 38% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Niger (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +131.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mauritania ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 86% of total imports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +112.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
