In 2021, overseas shipments of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) decreased by -34% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 1,325% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chlorides exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 1,973%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the major exporter of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) in Western Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 39% of total exports in 2021. Togo (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Senegal (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 55% share of total exports. The following exporters - Guinea (X tons) and Niger (X tons) - together made up 4.6% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +23.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest chlorides supplier in Western Africa, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 8.9% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, chlorides exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+26.6% per year) and Nigeria (+12.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 63%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Chlorides imports soared to X tons in 2021, picking up by 18% against 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chlorides imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 53%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) represented the key importer of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride), achieving 43% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons), together making up a 43% share of total imports. The following importers - Niger (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) - together made up 7.7% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chlorides imports into Nigeria stood at -6.1%. At the same time, Mauritania (+19.7%), Burkina Faso (+18.0%), Senegal (+10.5%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +19.7% from 2012-2021. Niger experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ghana (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritania (+6 p.p.), Senegal (+5 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.5 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-10.2 p.p.) and Nigeria (-13.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest chlorides importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 76% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +21.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -6.9% against the previous year. Import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, chlorides import price decreased by -16.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 25%.
