In 2022, the West African rock cutter market decreased by -52.6% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed strong growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Mali (X units) represented the major exporter of coal or rock cutters and tunnelling machinery, making up 39% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X units), Benin (X units), Nigeria (X units), Togo (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units), together mixing up a 58% share of total exports. Ghana (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 71% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per unit), while Senegal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+77.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of coal or rock cutters and tunnelling machinery decreased by -47.2% to X units in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 233% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, rock cutter imports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 206%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

At the same time, Niger (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Ghana (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 47%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+8.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
