The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Benin (+9 p.p.), Nigeria (+5.3 p.p.) and Niger (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ghana and Mali saw its share reduced by -2.3% and -6.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Togo ($X) and Nigeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 77% share of total imports. Benin, Mali, Niger and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

Niger, with a CAGR of +64.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
