After two years of decline, purchases abroad of cod, salted or in brine increased by 65% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 304%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cod, salted or in brine imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 253% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) was the key importer of cod, salted or in brine, achieving 55% of total imports. Cabo Verde (X kg) took a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Guinea-Bissau (13%). The following importers - Liberia (X kg) and Benin (X kg) - together made up 5% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cod, salted or in brine imports into Nigeria stood at -14.1%. At the same time, Benin (+19.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +19.2% from 2012-2022. Benin, with a CAGR of +17.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Liberia ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Liberia (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
