Green Coffee Market Size in Western Africa

The West African green coffee market reduced notably to $X in 2022, waning by -23.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Green Coffee Production in Western Africa

In value terms, green coffee production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 109%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of green coffee production was Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), comprising approx. 65% of total volume. Moreover, green coffee production in Cote d'Ivoire exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Guinea (X tons), threefold. Togo (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Cote d'Ivoire was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Guinea (+2.4% per year) and Togo (+4.6% per year).

In 2022, the average green coffee yield in Western Africa dropped to X kg per ha, with a decrease of -9.7% against 2021 figures. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 42%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the green coffee yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of coffee (green) production in Western Africa totaled X ha, growing by 3.9% compared with the previous year's figure. The total harvested area indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, green coffee harvested area decreased by -6.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 23%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of coffee (green) increased by 75% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 69% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 76% of total exports in 2022. Togo (X tons) held an 8.5% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Guinea (8.3%) and Sierra Leone (6.3%).

Exports from Cote d'Ivoire decreased at an average annual rate of -5.6% from 2012 to 2022. Sierra Leone experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Togo (-5.2%) and Guinea (-13.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire and Sierra Leone increased by +7 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest green coffee supplier in Western Africa, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Sierra Leone, with a 7.1% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, green coffee exports contracted by an average annual rate of -8.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (-6.3% per year) and Sierra Leone (-2.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -4.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (-1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, imports of coffee (green) in Western Africa contracted markedly to X tons, declining by -20.2% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 175%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Senegal (X tons), distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) were the main importers of coffee (green), together comprising 94% of total imports. Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +28.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest green coffee importing markets in Western Africa were Senegal ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X), with a combined 80% share of total imports.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +35.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 36% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+11.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
