Exports in Western Africa

Comb exports soared to X tons in 2022, picking up by 58% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 99% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, comb exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -18.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 76%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Ghana (X kg), distantly followed by Mauritania (X kg), Senegal (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg) were the main exporters of combs and hair-slides, together generating 88% of total exports. The following exporters - Niger (X kg), Sierra Leone (X kg) and Burkina Faso (X kg) - each finished at an 8.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Sierra Leone (with a CAGR of +122.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest comb supplying countries in Western Africa were Mauritania ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X), together accounting for 73% of total exports. Senegal, Burkina Faso, Niger and Sierra Leone lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Sierra Leone, with a CAGR of +73.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -21.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 42%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Sierra Leone ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+15.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of combs and hair-slides increased by 23% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, comb imports reached $X in 2022. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +24.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together constituting 71% of total imports. Togo (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.3% share, followed by Senegal (8.6%). The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) - together made up 8.7% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ghana (with a CAGR of +24.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported combs and hair-slides in Western Africa, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 8.8% share.

In Ghana, comb imports increased at an average annual rate of +23.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+8.2% per year) and Nigeria (-16.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -18.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 89% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
