Exports in Western Africa

For the third consecutive year, Western Africa recorded decline in shipments abroad of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof, which decreased by -2% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 24%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, computing machinery exports dropped to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 26%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Nigeria was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 42% of total exports. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (13%) and Ghana (8.4%). Togo (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -7.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Gambia (+27.5%) and Senegal (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +27.5% from 2012-2021. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Sierra Leone (-8.5%), Togo (-10.0%) and Ghana (-10.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+13 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+5.2 p.p.) and Gambia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Togo (-1.7 p.p.), Ghana (-5.3 p.p.) and Nigeria (-5.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 61% of total exports. Sierra Leone, Ghana, Togo and Gambia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Gambia, with a CAGR of +25.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+16.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof decreased by -0.6% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 308% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, computing machinery imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +64.1% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the key importer of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof in Western Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 70% of total imports in 2021. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (5.6%). Senegal (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -12.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+2.4%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +2.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Senegal (-1.1%) and Ghana (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal and Burkina Faso increased by +6.4, +3.6, +2.3 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest computing machinery importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 74% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +9.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 187% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
