After three years of decline, overseas shipments of concentrated apple juice increased by 188% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, concentrated apple juice exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Togo was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 63% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together creating a 34% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the concentrated apple juice exports, with a CAGR of +65.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Senegal (-3.2%), Ghana (-17.3%) and Nigeria (-32.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Togo (+63 p.p.), Senegal (+11 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -76.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Togo ($X) remains the largest concentrated apple juice supplier in Western Africa, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Togo stood at +72.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+0.5% per year) and Nigeria (-35.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, concentrated apple juice export price increased by +64.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of concentrated apple juice decreased by -41.6% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 122%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, concentrated apple juice imports reduced notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 138%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 74% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), achieving a 6.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Benin (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the concentrated apple juice imports, with a CAGR of +9.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guinea (+9.4%), Benin (+9.3%) and Senegal (+9.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cabo Verde (-8.0%) and Ghana (-22.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+36 p.p.) and Senegal (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-1.8 p.p.), Cabo Verde (-5 p.p.) and Ghana (-31.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported concentrated apple juice in Western Africa, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 3.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 2.2% share.

In Nigeria, concentrated apple juice imports increased at an average annual rate of +18.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+5.5% per year) and Senegal (+17.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -8.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
