As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, exports of concentrated lemon and other citrus fruit juice reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 334% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Burkina Faso dominates juice structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 86% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), creating a 7.2% share of total exports. The following exporters - Nigeria (X tons) and Togo (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.2% share of total exports.

Burkina Faso was also the fastest-growing in terms of the concentrated lemon and other citrus fruit juice exports, with a CAGR of +44.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+24.3%), Togo (+23.1%) and Nigeria (+20.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Burkina Faso (+54 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Nigeria (-2.2 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-3.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) remains the largest concentrated lemon and other citrus fruit juice supplier in Western Africa, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Burkina Faso stood at +18.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+21.9% per year) and Togo (+30.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 43%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 165%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of concentrated lemon and other citrus fruit juice declined remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable descent. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +81.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mauritania (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Mali and Burkina Faso increased by +5.5, +5.2, +4 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported concentrated lemon and other citrus fruit juice in Western Africa, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 5.9% share.

In Senegal, imports of concentrated lemon and other citrus fruit juice contracted by an average annual rate of -6.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (+5.3% per year) and Ghana (+3.5% per year).
