After two years of decline, the West African copper pipe and fitting market increased by 0.4% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, showed a mild decline. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, copper pipe and fitting exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced descent. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) was the key exporter of copper tubes, pipes and fitting, creating 57% of total exports. Ghana (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Sierra Leone (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 40% share of total exports. Senegal (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +33.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+55.2%), Sierra Leone (+42.6%) and Senegal (+8.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +55.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-19.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+54 p.p.), Sierra Leone (+12 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+5 p.p.) and Senegal (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-70.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Sierra Leone ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 74% of total exports. Burkina Faso and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +69.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -30.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 54% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of copper tubes, pipes and fitting decreased by -5.9% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +69.6% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 51%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, copper pipe and fitting imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +89.6% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Ghana (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) was the major importer of copper tubes, pipes and fitting in Western Africa, generating 81% of total import. Benin (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +11.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 49% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
