The West African corrugated paper market reached $X in 2021, picking up by 3.5% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. In 2021, shipments abroad of corrugated paper and paperboard increased by 0.4% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 25%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, corrugated paper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a slight slump. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana was the major exporter of corrugated paper and paperboard in Western Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 53% of total exports in 2021. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took a 32% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritania (9%). The following exporters - Guinea (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) - together made up 4.5% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +46.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest corrugated paper supplying countries in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Mauritania ($X), together accounting for 97% of total exports. Guinea and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 1.9%.

Among the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +39.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 27% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+18.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, the amount of corrugated paper and paperboard imported in Western Africa skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 22% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 154%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, corrugated paper imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together achieving 80% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together constituting a 13% share of total imports. Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +37.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest corrugated paper importing markets in Western Africa were Mauritania ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X), together comprising 85% of total imports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +33.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 14%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
