In 2021, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in the West African unroasted decaffeinated coffee market, when its value decreased by -9.6% to $X. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Unroasted Decaffeinated Coffee Production in Western Africa

In value terms, unroasted decaffeinated coffee production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 72%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

For the seventh consecutive year, Western Africa recorded decline in shipments abroad of unroasted decaffeinated coffee, which decreased by -47.7% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a significant decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unroasted decaffeinated coffee exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a dramatic contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented the main exporter of unroasted decaffeinated coffee, generating 44% of total exports. Guinea (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Togo (17%) and Sierra Leone (14%). The following exporters - Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - each recorded a 5.9% share of total exports.

Exports from Cote d'Ivoire decreased at an average annual rate of -24.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+80.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +80.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Sierra Leone (-10.2%), Togo (-16.0%), Guinea (-22.2%) and Ghana (-32.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Sierra Leone (+10 p.p.), Togo (+8.6 p.p.) and Nigeria (+3.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -6.5% and -12.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Togo ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Guinea ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 77% of total exports. Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +63.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 59% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Unroasted Decaffeinated Coffee Imports

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, the amount of unroasted decaffeinated coffee imported in Western Africa reduced slightly to X tons, approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unroasted decaffeinated coffee imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +18.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of unroasted decaffeinated coffee imports in 2021 were Gambia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Benin (X tons), Mali (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), together recording 89% of total import. It was distantly followed by Mauritania (X tons), making up a 5.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Benin (with a CAGR of +36.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported unroasted decaffeinated coffee in Western Africa, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mali ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal amounted to +31.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mali (+14.3% per year) and Nigeria (+2.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 84%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+19.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
