In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in the West African desktop computer market, when its value increased by 13% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. In 2021, overseas shipments of desktop computers decreased by -27.9% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 488%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, desktop computer exports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Senegal represented the key exporting country with an export of around X units, which finished at 51% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), Niger (X units), Burkina Faso (X units) and Ghana (X units), together creating a 44% share of total exports.
Exports from Senegal decreased at an average annual rate of -17.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+28.3%), Niger (+8.5%) and Burkina Faso (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +28.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-11.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Niger, Ghana, Burkina Faso and Nigeria increased by +14, +4.6, +4.3 and +3.5 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest desktop computer supplying countries in Western Africa were Senegal ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 73% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +20.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, dropping by -2.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a measured expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 243%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Niger ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+10.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa
For the fourth consecutive year, Western Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of desktop computers, which increased by 48% to X units in 2021. Overall, imports posted a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 119%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, desktop computer imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 161% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Cabo Verde (X units), distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Ghana (X units), Senegal (X units), Mali (X units), Guinea (X units) and Togo (X units) represented the key importers of desktop computers, together comprising 87% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +53.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ghana ($X), Senegal ($X) and Mali ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 46% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +41.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -22% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 36% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Cabo Verde ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
