The West African disperse dye market fell to $X in 2021, declining by -6.1% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, the amount of disperse dyes and preparations based thereon exported in Western Africa soared to X tons, jumping by 54% against 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, disperse dye exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the major exporter of disperse dyes and preparations based thereon in Western Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 74% of total exports in 2021. Ghana (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Togo (4.6%). The following exporters - Gambia (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg) - each reached a 6.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to disperse dye exports from Cote d'Ivoire stood at +3.8%. At the same time, Ghana (+28.2%) and Togo (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +28.2% from 2012-2021. Gambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Nigeria (-17.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Gambia and Togo increased by +45, +12, +3.3 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest disperse dye supplier in Western Africa, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Gambia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Cote d'Ivoire amounted to -3.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Gambia (0.0% per year) and Ghana (+24.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Gambia ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of disperse dyes and preparations based thereon, when their volume decreased by -47.3% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, disperse dye imports plummeted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 105% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 78% of total imports in 2021. Burkina Faso (X tons) took a 9.4% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (5.1%). The following importers - Mauritania (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.3% share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+25.5%) and Ghana (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +25.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Senegal (-5.8%) and Mauritania (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+27 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+8.1 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritania saw its share reduced by -3.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported disperse dyes and preparations based thereon in Western Africa, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 3.1% share.

In Nigeria, disperse dye imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+11.5% per year) and Senegal (+5.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
