In 2021, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in the West African dog and cat food market, when its value decreased by -7.8% to $X. The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +65.8% against 2014 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, dog and cat food production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +62.7% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 18%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

After three years of decline, shipments abroad of dog and cat food increased by 15% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dog and cat food exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 122%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Senegal represented the main exporter of dog and cat food in Western Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 65% of total exports in 2021. Niger (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Togo (X tons). All these countries together held near 29% share of total exports. The following exporters - Liberia (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - together made up 4.9% of total exports.

Exports from Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Niger (+51.7%), Ghana (+46.6%) and Liberia (+42.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +51.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Togo (-18.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+20 p.p.), Niger (+20 p.p.), Liberia (+2.6 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Togo saw its share reduced by -34.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest dog and cat food supplier in Western Africa, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Niger, with a 7% share.

In Senegal, dog and cat food exports increased at an average annual rate of +14.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (-13.2% per year) and Niger (+25.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 92%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+12.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

After five years of growth, purchases abroad of dog and cat food decreased by -16.7% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 53%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, dog and cat food imports fell sharply to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +53.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 41%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 46% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (12%), Senegal (8.1%), Cabo Verde (6.2%) and Benin (5.7%). Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +11.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Benin (+18.2%), Senegal (+14.2%), Cabo Verde (+14.2%), Togo (+11.3%), Ghana (+4.3%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +18.2% from 2012-2021. Nigeria (+7 p.p.), Benin (+2.9 p.p.), Senegal (+2.7 p.p.) and Cabo Verde (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -6.1% and -10.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dog and cat food in Western Africa, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria totaled +6.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+1.0% per year) and Ghana (+3.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -1.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
