Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, the amount of powdered milk exported in Western Africa expanded significantly to X tons, increasing by 13% on the previous year. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, powdered milk exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Togo was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 43% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together comprising a 44% share of total exports. Niger (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mali (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +17.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Togo ($X) remains the largest powdered milk supplier in Western Africa, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Togo stood at -2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (-15.8% per year) and Ghana (+2.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -18.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+9.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, overseas purchases of powdered milk decreased by -17.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 46%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, powdered milk imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 65%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) was the major importer of powdered milk, constituting 43% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (8.2%), Burkina Faso (5%), Senegal (4.9%), Mauritania (4.7%), Gambia (4.7%) and Mali (4.6%).

Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of powdered milk. At the same time, Ghana (+7.3%), Burkina Faso (+7.0%), Gambia (+5.1%), Mali (+4.5%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +7.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritania (-3.4%) and Senegal (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+7 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+2.3 p.p.) and Gambia (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritania, Nigeria and Senegal saw its share reduced by -2.3%, -3.2% and -3.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported powdered milk in Western Africa, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 8.9% share.

In Nigeria, powdered milk imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+4.8% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
