Dried Prune Market Size in Western Africa

In 2022, the West African dried prune market decreased by -0.6% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, posted a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dried prune production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of dried prunes, when their volume increased by 229% to X tons. In general, exports posted significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,263% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, dried prune exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 3,234% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Burkina Faso (X tons) was the key exporter of dried prunes, mixing up 56% of total exports. Nigeria (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Benin (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 40% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Burkina Faso experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of dried prunes. At the same time, Benin (+74.1%) and Nigeria (+44.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +74.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Benin increased by +56, +19 and +12 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) emerged as the largest dried prune supplier in Western Africa, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Benin ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 6.9% share.

In Burkina Faso, dried prune exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Benin (+128.0% per year) and Nigeria (+27.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 202% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 6,889% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+30.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Dried Prune Imports

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of dried prunes, when their volume decreased by -4.3% to X tons. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +6.6% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 31%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In value terms, dried prune imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +39.5% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Cabo Verde (X tons) represented the major importer of dried prunes, making up 42% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mauritania (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Benin (X tons), together committing a 50% share of total imports. Niger (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried prune imports into Cabo Verde stood at +7.7%. At the same time, Benin (+40.6%), Mauritania (+14.0%), Niger (+12.8%), Senegal (+11.4%) and Ghana (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +40.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mauritania (+7.6 p.p.), Benin (+5.3 p.p.), Senegal (+4.8 p.p.) and Cabo Verde (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -12.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cabo Verde ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dried prunes in Western Africa, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritania ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Cabo Verde totaled +6.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritania (+15.7% per year) and Senegal (+9.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
