Guinea (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Mali (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons). All these countries together took near 25% share of total exports. Sierra Leone (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, Guinea ($X) emerged as the largest driving and non-driving axle supplier in Western Africa, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Liberia, with a 14% share.

In Guinea, driving and non-driving axle exports expanded at an average annual rate of +61.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+15.5% per year) and Liberia (+58.1% per year).

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 81% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 85%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

At the same time, Burkina Faso (+58.0%), Ghana (+18.8%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+11.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +58.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana and Burkina Faso increased by +13 and +9.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 69% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +37.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 113% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
